Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde

Espaços Religiosos / Martim Moniz, Intendente e Mouraria

Situated on the busy Rua da Mouraria, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde was founded in 1505 by the gunners of the city of Lisbon, being then dedicated to Saint Sebastian, a saint who was the object of great devotion in Portugal, for his protection against evils such as war, famine and the plague. Only later, in 1569, it was dedicated to Our Lady of Health and every year, on the first Sunday of May, the Procession of Our Lady of Health was held, in order to thank and protect the Virgin Mary. This is the oldest religious procession in Lisbon, and it is still going on today.
