Discover Lisbon through song: Lisboa Menina e Moça

On World Tourism Day, we found in fado a way to express the passion that all those who visit Lisbon, around 4.5 million tourists a year, and that year after year elect and distinguish in the many awards that are attributed to it.

We chose the song “Lisboa Menina e Moça” immortalized in the voice of Carlos do Carmo, recognized as the “great” ambassador of Fado. A poem that has become a symbol of Lisbon and that reflects the feeling that crosses borders and is perpetuated when tourists return home.

The fado “Lisboa Menina e Moça” personifies and describes the city in an exceptional way. Released in 1976, it is part of the album “Uma Canção para a Europa”, by Carlos do Carmo. The poem is written by José Carlos Ary dos Santos, Joaquim Pessoa and Fernando Tordo, with music by Paulo de Carvalho.

Lyrics: Lisboa Menina e Moça

No Castelo ponho um cotovelo

Em Alfama descanso o olhar

E assim desfaço o novelo de azul e mar

Á Ribeira encosto a cabeça

Almofada da cama do Tejo

Com lençóis bordados à pressa

na cambraia dum beijo

Lisboa menina e moça menina

Da luz que os meus olhos vêm tão pura

Teus seios são as colinas varina

Pregão que me traz à porta ternura

Cidade a ponto-luz bordada

Pregão que me traz à porta ternura

Cidade a ponto-luz bordada

Toalha á beira-mar estendida

Lisboa menina e moça amada

Cidade mulher da minha vida

Lisboa no meu amor deitada

Cidade por minhas mãos despida

Lisboa menina e moça amada

Cidade mulher da minha vida

Note: Since 1980, the 27th of September is celebrated as World Tourism Day. The choice of date is due to the fact that it was on this day, in 1970, that important directives for global tourism came into force. This day serves to promote awareness of the social, cultural, political and economic value of tourism and the contribution of this activity to the Sustainable Development Goals.
