Bairro Alto: Lisbon’s lively nightlife

Bohemian is the most natural of adjectives to describe Bairro Alto, as the place is famous for the nightlife that animates the sloping streets of this Lisbon hill, where at every door a bar, restaurant or fado house opens to the outside. But the days in Bairro Alto are equally full of life with an eclectic and creative offer, side by side with the traditional churches and monuments.

The fascination of Bairro Alto owes much to this diversity, which both hosts galleries and ateliers that exhibit the work of contemporary national and international artists and preserves the cultural heritage of centuries of history. The São Roque Museum is one of those places, where an enviable collection of Portuguese sacred art can be appreciated. It is located in the Church of São Roque, which has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Days in Bairro Alto are just as enjoyable. In addition to the charm of the narrow streets and its typical architecture, the area also has open spaces with viewpoints that provide the best panoramic views of Lisbon. Or were it not for this one of the highest hills in the city. The Santa Catarina Viewpoint reveals all the splendor of the Tagus and the 25 de Abril bridge and, on the opposite side, the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint is a privileged balcony overlooking downtown and the Castle of São Jorge.
