Built in a hermitage in 1545 and upgraded to a parish church in 1567, the São José dos Carpinteiros Church has stood the test of time and is now considered to be of Public Interest. This church of Baroque and Pombaline architecture has a historic-religious and artistic collection that is worth a visit.

Curiosity: The poet Alexandre O'Neill was baptised in this church in 1925.

    Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade was built following the style of the Champs Elysées between 1879 and 1882. It opened up a new era in the urbanisation and expansion of the city to the north and very quickly became the address of choice for high society. This aura of exclusivity accompanies it to the present day and its historic and imposing buildings (such as number 206 where Prada is) are home to five-star hotels, luxury shops and leading companies.
