Built to house the emblematic world exhibition Expo'98, with reception and exhibition functions, the Pavilion of Portugal was a project developed by the renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, and received the Valmor and Municipal Architecture Award that year.

A distinction to which the concrete visor at the entrance to the building, described by many as "a true feat of engineering", contributed greatly. In 2010 it was classified as a Public Interest Monument and is currently being renovated to house a congress and exhibition centre.
