Located in the middle of the hillside of the Parque Eduardo VII, in an eclectic architectural project, inspired by the decorativism of the Joanine Baroque, the pavilion which is now often the stage of various exhibitions and events, was built in 1921 for the Rio de Janeiro International Exhibition (1922), under the name of Pavilion of Industries. In 1984 it was renamed as we know it today in honour of Carlos Lopes, the first Portuguese athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games.
