Opened in 1977 under the supervision of Natália Correia Guedes - the first woman to have founded a museum in Portugal - the National Costume Museum occupies the former Palace of Angeja-Palmela. In a place that seems to have been designed for the purpose, we find a vast collection of national and foreign costumes and accessories, from the 18th century to the present day.

The visit to the museum is organised in such a way as to go through the various rooms chronologically, where it is possible to understand the occupations and lifestyles of those who once wore those clothes and accessories. And, since most of the museum's collection comes from donations from private collections, these pieces also tell the story of many Portuguese and European families.
