The small and popular Manteigaria store, next to Largo de Camões, has gained a larger space in Mercado da Ribeira, where the best custard tarts in Lisbon come out of the oven all the time. The formula for success is very simple and does not need to be kept under lock and key: artisanal production, the quality of the raw materials used – whole eggs, quality butter instead of margarine, sugar to taste, no preservatives –; and the process of opening the puff pastry, which is all done by hand and requires several months of training to be done well.
