The Amoreiras’ Mãe d’Água Reservoir, better known as just Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras, is the tank that receives and distributes the water carried by the Águas Livres Aqueduct. Designed in 1745, and built in the Amoreiras Garden, it was only completed in 1834. It is currently presented as a large space, its interior being comparable to the layout of a Salon-style church. The water from the springs pours out of the mouth of a dolphin over a cascade and converges into a tank from which four columns emerge, supporting a vaulted ceiling which in turn supports the magnificent panoramic terrace over the city of Lisbon. The Water Museum promotes and organises free and guided tours to the Reservoir, which also hosts exhibitions.
