The importance of wine in the Portuguese economy led to the creation of the current Vine and Wine Institute in November 1993. A public institute responsible for coordinating and controlling the institutional organisation of the wine sector, and among its various functions that of ensuring the functioning of the National Commission of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (CNOIV).
