Santuário Nossa Senhora da Luz
Espaços Religiosos / Carnide
This church began as a sanctuary, built by the infanta D. Maria in the 16th century to house the Casa da Irmandade and the exterior services for the devout pilgrims. Today, only the main chapel and the transept remain of this church, the result of the tragic earthquake of 1755 that struck the city of Lisbon. Some later remodelling allowed Manueline vestiges to be preserved in the arch that frames the diving fountain (formerly associated with cures and miracles) and in the Hispano-Arab tiles of the access staircase. From 1918 onwards, the Church, as it is today, became the headquarters of the Carnide parish.
