The prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is located in Avenidas Novas. This private law and general public utility Portuguese institution with perpetual character, whose statutory purposes are art, charity, science and education, receives numerous visitors daily.

Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian is the name behind its creation. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was inaugurated in 1956 by will of the philanthropist of Armenian origin who lived in Lisbon between 1942 and 1955, when he passed away.

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum Building

The institution invites you to explore the Gulbenkian Museum, filled with works that Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian has collected over the years. From Egyptian and Greco-Roman art to Islamic and Far Eastern art, as well as European numismatics, painting and decorative arts, the Gulbenkian Museum is a journey into the past.

José Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Centre

In 1983, at one end of the lovely garden that embellishes the Gulbenkian, the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Centre was inaugurated to house the collection of Portuguese modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st centuries, where we can marvel at painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and engraving, with the most representative collection of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.

The Modern Collection also shows British art from the 1960s to the present day, Armenian art, particularly works by Arshile Gorky, and a significant number of works by Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes.

Art Library

Focusing on the world of the visual arts, architecture and design, the Gulbenkian Museum's Art Library contains a diverse and extensive collection of relevant documents for study and research in the fields of Portuguese and international artistic production and art history.
