Built during the reconstruction of downtown Lisbon, after the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Pier of Colunas allowed access to the ferries and other boats and functioned as the "noble" gateway to Lisbon through which arrive several important figures, from heads of state to elements of the international monarchy as was the case of Queen Elizabeth II of England. Today, it is a mandatory stop for those visiting Lisbon, and even considered one of the favourite places to watch the sunset.
