With two floors, galleries with temporary and permanent exhibitions, auditorium, disco, restaurant and bar, Ler Devagar will be a mandatory stop on the reader's itinerary. Founded by Pedro Faure in 1732, it became associated in 1742 with Pierre Bertrand, with whom one of his daughters married. When the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755 arrived, the bookstore was forced to move to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades and it was only in 1773, with the reconstruction of Chiado, that we see it return to its place of origin where, since then, it has remained for over two centuries.

The bookstore recognized in 2019 as a Loja com História, by the Lisbon City Council, was frequented by giants of Portuguese literature such as Bocage, José Agostinho Macedo, Alexandre Herculano, Eça de Queiroz, among many others. Many of these illustrious Portuguese literature names their rooms. Upon entering the main door, we are welcomed by the Aquilino Ribeiro room, one of the seven spaces full of literary history. If, in turn, we opt for the entrance to Rua Anchieta, the Café Bertrand opened in May 2017 and where we can taste the best recipes of Portuguese and international cuisine, from 9 am to 10 pm, the Fernando Pessoa room will welcome us. The “visit” is only complete when visiting the José Saramago, Eça de Queiroz, Almada Negreiros, Alexandre Herculano and Sophia de Mello Breyner rooms.

Chiado

It is considered to be one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Lisbon today, but the truth is that Chiado has never gone out of fashion. Its charm was well evidenced by great figures of the arts and literature in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Eça de Queiroz and Fernando Pessoa, who used to frequent this area in a Lisbon of other times and referred to it in their works.
