BASÍLIO, Nicolau's cousin: His stubbornness and courage cut through Amazonian savannas and paved the way for Brazil's holy grail: coffee. Basílio, a playful and temperamental entrepreneur, became one of the great coffee barons of the 19th century and when the coffee cycle grew, Basílio's independence jumped out and took a chance on his own farm.

He challenged his cousin Nicolau and together they prospered by exporting coffee to all European capitals. But the nostalgia hit hard and Basílio returned, he became a bohemian and “bon vivant” of Lisbon, always at his cousin's side.

The coffee at Bacalhoeiros reflects the spirit of Basilio, alive and well.
