Take advantage of Lisbon’s festivities to taste the region’s traditional snacks
They are sought after throughout the year, but with the arrival of the Lisbon festivals, they gain even more prominence. We are talking about traditional Lisbon snacks, which are a regular presence at national tables. You may have heard of them all, but have you tried them? If so, it’s time to repeat these delicacies, which taste even better on hot summer days.
Caracóis
Considered one of the most popular summer snacks in Lisbon, snails are known to be present on the platters only in the months without an “r”: May, June, July and August. During this period, there are many restaurants and snacks that serve them, especially Júlio dos Caracóis, who is a true specialist when it comes to this “delicacy”.

The first savory recipe was created by Carlos Bento da Maia, who published it in the book “Tratado de Cozinha e Copa” at the beginning of the 20th century. Atualmente, este é um dos salgados com maior popularidade na capital, cuja versão original está presente na Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau.

Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato
The snack arose from the creation of Raimundo António de Bulhão Pato, the name by which the “pitéu” became known. In addition to a snack, clams are also consumed as a dish in many Lisbon restaurants, such as Tico Tico, which also has other typical snacks on the menu. This traditional and popular delicacy is served mainly in the summer, so it is ideal to accompany it with a very fresh imperial.
